Types of Scholarships

The University of Mississippi has many scholarships that have been made available through the generous donations of alumni and friends of the university. The scholarships listed below are available for incoming freshmen and transfer students that plan to attend The University of Mississippi beginning Fall 2023-2024.

Incoming freshmen who wish to be considered for scholarships must file a University of Mississippi Admission Application, and submit an online Special Programs & Scholarships Application. This application should be completed by February 15th.  These awards are not eligible for students with a prior bachelor’s degree.

Transfer students should submit a University of Mississippi Admission application, and submit the online Community College Transfer Scholarship Application, and submit a transcript that includes three semesters of grades. All students must be admitted to The University of Mississippi to be considered for scholarships. Some departmental and professional school awards are not included in this listing. Scholarship eligibility, criteria, and amounts may change at any time without prior notice.  These awards are not eligible for students with a prior bachelor’s degree.

University Foundation Scholarships

Stamps Scholarship

  • Award Amount: Up to Cost of Attendance after other awards. The package includes a $12,000 stipend for educational activities outside the classroom, including study abroad, research, and other enrichment pursuits.

W. R. Newman Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi residents; exceptional academic and leadership record required

Robert M. Carrier Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are Mississippi residents; exceptional academic and leadership record required

Luckyday Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $8,000-$24,000 ($2,000-$6,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshman from Mississippi with 20 ACT or higher (940 SAT/1020 SAT-R), 3.2 or higher GPA and remaining financial need after considering other scholarships or grants. Selection is competitive and considers grades, test scores, financial need, leadership, activities, and the Luckyday essay. 80 new freshmen are chosen each year.

  • Award Amount: $40,000 ($10,000 per year)

Military Science

Army ROTC Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $12,600-$113,400 ($3,150- $28,350 per year)
  • Eligibility: Scholarships are awarded to young men and women from freshmen to graduate level at the University of Mississippi. Student must have a strong academic background and demonstrate a commitment to leadership and achieving excellence.

Transfer & Community College Scholarships

To be eligible for any scholarships listed below, students need a minimum of 48 transferable college credit hours. The calculation of this transfer GPA will include the grades from all prior colleges attended.

Lyceum Scholar Awards

  • Award Amount:  Full resident tuition for two years ($9,072 for the 2023-2024 year)
  • Eligibility:  Community College Transfer students with at least a 3.0 transfer GPA on at least 48 transferable college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service.

Community College Leadership Scholarships

  • Award Amount:  $6,000 ($3,000 per year for two years)
  • Eligibility:  Community College Transfer students with at least a 3.0 transfer GPA on at least 48 transferable college credit hours and an exemplary record of leadership and service.

Mississippi Community College Advantage Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $10,000 ($5,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Community College transfer students who are MS residents with at least 48 transferable college credit hours and at least a 2.5 or higher overall transfer GPA. Students must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and have a family adjusted gross income of $40,000 or less (as reported on the previous year’s Federal tax return.). This is a competitive scholarship and 50 awards are made each year.
  • How to Apply: To be considered for this scholarship, transfer students must have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file (the priority date is March 1), and submit the online Community College Transfer Scholarship Application.

UM Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship 1

  • Award Amount: $14,000 ($7,000 per year for two years)
  • Eligibility: Transfer students with a GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 on at least 48 transferable college credit hours and membership in Phi Theta Kappa. Members of the All Mississippi Team will receive an additional one-time only $1,000 scholarship and an additional $1,000 one-time only scholarship will be awarded to those students who become members of the All American Team. Non-residents will receive an additional $7,000 per year for two years toward the non-resident fee.

UM Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship 2

  • Award Amount: $16,000 ($8,000 per year for two years)
  • Eligibility: Transfer students with a GPA of 3.5 or higher on at least 48 transferable college credit hours and membership in Phi Theta Kappa. Members of the All Mississippi Team will receive an additional one-time only $1,000 scholarship and an additional $1,000 one-time only scholarship will be awarded to those students who become members of the All American Team. Luckyday University Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $12,000 (up to $6,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: These scholarships are awarded to a select group of 25 community college transfer students with a 2.5 overall GPA on at least 48 transferable college credit hours. Student’s receiving this award must be resident of Mississippi and must be transferring from Mississippi community college. In addition, students selected must have remaining financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal student Aid (FAFSA) after other scholarships and grants have been awarded.

Transfer Academic Excellence 1 Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $6,000 ($3,000 per year for two years)
  • Eligibility: These scholarships are awarded to transfer students with a 3.0 – 3.49 overall transfer GPA or higher and 48 transferable college credit hours. Students must be enrolled full-time to receive this award. This award cannot be stacked with Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships.

New Century Scholarship

  • Award Amount: Full resident tuition for two year ($9,072 for the 2022-2023 year)
  • Eligibility: Transfer students with a 3.00 overall transfer GPA on at least 48 transferable college credit hours and named a New Century Scholar. Non-Resident students will receive an additional scholarship to cover their full non-resident fee for two years ($17,220 for the 2022-2023 year).

Community College Student Body President

  • Award Amount: $3,000 ($1,500 per year for two years)
  • Eligibility: Community College Transfer students who served in the top elected position at their Community College. These scholarships are awarded to community college transfer students with a 3.0 overall transfer GPA or higher and 48 transferable college credit hours. Students must be enrolled full-time to receive this award.

Osher Reentry Scholarship

  • Award Amount: Up to $2,500 per year ($1,250/semester)
  • Eligibility: Students who are pursuing their first baccalaureate degree; have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years since High School graduation or attainment of GED; who are enrolled at least half-time, are US Citizens between 25 and 50 years old; and have demonstrated financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Academic Merit

Academic Merit Scholarships

  • Award Amount: Please see the following charts for award amounts, based on your residency status. These awards are fixed amounts that are renewable for up to four years as long as all terms and conditions are met. Also note:
    • At the 32 and 33+ ACT levels, the non-resident scholarship will be set to the value of the non-resident fee in Year One and capped at that amount for all undergraduates (including Pharmacy) for the life of the scholarship.
    • Similarly, at the 33+ ACT level, the scholarship stipend will be set to the value of tuition in Year One and capped at that amount for all undergraduates (including Pharmacy) for the life of the scholarship.)
    • Mississippi residents who earn at least a 3.5 high school GPA and 23 ACT score (or the SAT/SAT-R equivalent) are eligible for the additional 1848 scholarship. These award amounts are included on the Mississippi Residents chart.
  • Eligibility: Entering Freshman with minimum 3.0 high school GPA and 23 ACT score for Mississippi residents or 25 ACT score for non-residents (or the SAT/SAT-R equivalent). Beginning in the 2021-2022 academic year, the university will accept super scores (highest subject tests from ACT/SAT when scores from multiple test dates are submitted for admission). Subject test scores must be from the same exam type (ACT or SAT) to create a super score.

Academic Excellence National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist Scholarship

  • Award Amount:  Includes full tuition scholarship and the standard cost of a double occupancy room in a campus residence hall. Also covers full non-resident fee, if applicable. Please be advised that these awards are renewable for up to four years as long as all terms and conditions are met.  These cannot be stacked with the Academic Merit awards.
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen with National Merit Semifinalist/Finalist status and a 3.0 or higher GPA.

National Merit Finalist Award

  • Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshman with finalist status and selection of Ole Miss as first choice and who are not receiving a National Merit Corporate award

  • Award Amount: $20,000 ($5,000 / year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who have achieved National Merit Finalist status and have a 3.0 or higher high school GPA.

Mississippi Star Student Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $8,000 ($2,000 / year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen from Mississippi who have been selected as the Star Student of their high school.

High School Valedictorian/Salutatorian Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $6,000 ($1,500 / year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are named Valedictorian or Salutatorian of their high school. This award is intended for 2 incoming freshmen from each school, so the HS must maintain class rankings.
  • How to Apply: Notify the Office of Financial Aid; a letter from a high school official must confirm (1) they have ranked the graduating class, and (2) the student has obtained the ranking of #1 or #2. Documentation may be faxed to the Office of Financial Aid at 662-915-1164.

Mississippi All-Star Scholarship

  • Award Amount: $4,000 ($1,000 / year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen from Mississippi who have been selected as one of the top 20 All-Star Scholarships by the Mississippi Economic Council.

  • Award Amount: $8,000 ($2,000 per year)
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who are residents of Mississippi and the Memphis area who have earned the AICE Cambridge Diploma while in high school, and have at least a 3.0 high school GPA.

Chinese Language Flagship Scholarships

  • Award Amount: $32,000 ($8,000 per year)
    Army & AFROTC Amount: full tuition or room & board for up to 4 years
    Study Abroad (regular): Up to $24,000
    Study Abroad (Army & AF ROTC): Up to $36,000

Intensive Summer Program Scholarships

  • Award Amount:3-hour tuition scholarship for entering freshmen who join JumpStart. Applicants to the German ISP program may apply for up to $3,500 for summer study on campus and abroad. Applicants to the Japanese and Russian programs should contact the language directors for those programs for details on scholarship options.
  • Eligibility: Entering freshmen who intend to minor or major in German, Japanese, or Russian will be considered. Current UM students will also be considered. Most students will begin with summer intensive language study in German, Japanese, or Russian prior to freshman year and will study abroad. Prior language experience is not required, but those with up to two years of high school language background may also apply.

  • Award Amount: Individually calculated per student to help meet a set percentage of the student’s financial need as a freshman.
  • Eligibility: To be eligible for Red & Blue, you must be a first-time/fulltime freshman with financial need after all other awards are considered.

Ole Miss Opportunity Scholarship

  • Eligibility: To be eligible for Ole Miss Opportunity, you must be a Mississippi resident, U.S. citizen or permanent resident, an entering freshman at the start of the fall semester in which you first enroll, seeking a degree, and enrolled full-time at Ole Miss. In addition, you must meet the following criteria:
    • Beginning with the 2022-2023 academic year, the family income listed on your FAFSA (from the federal tax return) must be at or below $40,000
    • Eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
    • 3.0 high-school GPA

Sumners Scholarship

  • Eligibility:
    • The student must be a resident of Attala, Carroll, Choctaw, Montgomery or Webster County in Mississippi who desires and can benefit from a higher education.
    • All applicants must have resided for 12 continuous months in one of the five Sumners counties prior to enrollment.
    • All applicants must be enrolled in a degree program at the institution. Teacher certification courses may also be approved (except for visiting students) if documented as such by the School of Education.
    • The amount of the Sumners Grant shall not exceed the cost of attendance when combined with all other types of aid received by the student (including institutional and other scholarships/grants, military stipends, veterans’ benefits).
    • Independent students who have not established a residence in one of the Sumners counties may not establish eligibility by the address of parents who reside in one of the eligible counties.
    • If you withdraw from the university within the 100 percent institutional refund period (the first 10 days of classes), any scholarship that has already credited to your bursar account must be repaid in full.
  • How to Apply: You must complete the form online and indicate the academic year for which you are applying. The Sumners Foundation verifies residency in the appropriate counties for all applicants.
  • Amount: Since the amount received by The University of Mississippi from the Sumners Trust may vary each year, as will the number of students enrolled from each of the eligible counties, it is possible that grant amounts may also vary from one year to the next. The following illustrates our current awarding expectations.

Veterans Non-Resident Scholarship

  • Award Amount: Full Non-Resident Fee
  • Eligibility: Incoming undergraduates or graduate students who have been engaged in and honorably discharged from active duty, for other than training purposes, in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard.

Academic Common Market (ACM) Scholarship

  • Program Description: The Academic Common Market (ACM) is a cooperative agreement allowing residents of a participating state to pursue academic degree programs not offered in their home states without having to pay out-of-state tuition charges. The 16 participating states include AL, AR, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MD, MS, OK, SC, TN, VA and WV.
  • Award Amount: Participation in ACM at Ole Miss allows qualified students to receive a scholarship that covers the non-resident fee in full. As a result, participants pay the in-state tuition only, similar to MS residents. (Please note that this award cannot be combined with any other award that specifically pays for the non-resident fee.)
  • Eligibility: Non-resident students from a state participating in ACM. Must major in one of the following degree programs: Bachelor of Science in Forensic Chemistry, Bachelor of Science in Geological Engineering OR Bachelor Arts in Southern Studies. Eligibility for programs offered by The University of Mississippi is determined by the state in which the student resides. All states and/or degree programs within ACM are not necessarily approved at the undergraduate level at The University of Mississippi.
